The Cybersecurity Awareness and Training Associate Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive cybersecurity awareness and training programs that promotes a strong security culture across the company. This role leads initiatives to reduce human risk, ensure compliance with regulatory and internal training requirements, and strengthen employee understanding of cybersecurity policies, best practices, and threat behaviors. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker and effective communicator, with a deep understanding of cybersecurity principles and adult learning methodologies.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Leadership and Strategy

  • Design, execute, and continuously improve the company’s cybersecurity awareness and training strategy in alignment with business goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Measure the effectiveness of training programs using metrics, assessments, and feedback, and report results to senior leadership.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on human-centric cybersecurity risks and mitigation strategies.

Training Program Development

  • Design, implement, and manage training programs tailored to various audiences, including team members, contractors, executives, and technical staff.
  • Create an annual mandatory company-wide cybersecurity training course.
  • Oversee annual role-based security education (e.g., developers, administrators, cyber operations, privileged users).
  • Partner with HR and Learning & Development to ensure cybersecurity content is integrated into onboarding and ongoing professional development programs.
  • Lead end-to-end planning and execution of an annual cybersecurity conference, coordinating speakers, activities, logistics, and team member engagement to drive awareness and collaboration.

Communications and Awareness Campaigns

  • Lead creative and engaging communication campaigns that reinforce key security messages through multiple channels (email, intranet, videos, newsletters, events).
  • Organize company-wide awareness events such as Cybersecurity Awareness Month, phishing simulations, and security champions programs.
  • Create and maintain the contents of the cybersecurity department’s internal website.
  • Develop metrics and dashboards to assess engagement, training completion, and cultural maturity.

Governance and Compliance

  • Ensure training and awareness activities meet internal policy requirements and align with relevant standards (NIST, NYDFS, PCI DSS, etc.).
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation of all training and exercise activities and results.
  • Collaborate with Legal, HR, and Cybersecurity Risk teams to address regulatory obligations.

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Lead a team of security awareness professionals.
  • Build partnerships across business units, Technology, and Corporate Communications to integrate cybersecurity culture into day-to-day operations.
  • Influence senior leadership to champion security behavior modeling and policy adherence.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Education, Communications, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in cybersecurity awareness, training, or a related field, with at least 3 years in a leadership or managerial role.
  • Strong knowledge of cybersecurity concepts, social engineering tactics, and adult learning principles.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with learning management systems (LMS), e-learning development tools, phishing simulation tools, and data analytics platforms.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team-building abilities.
  • Experience in a large enterprise or regulated industry (e.g., financial services, healthcare, government).
  • Ability to translate technical topics into accessible content for non-technical audiences.
