We are seeking a skilled and dynamic Manager, Monitoring Tooling and Engineering to lead our team in the Production Operations organization. This leadership position will be responsible for managing a team focused on the development and optimization of tools and instrumentation associated with observability, monitoring, and alerting. You will collaborate closely with Technology partners to ensure that we have the proper monitoring solutions in place to prevent adverse impacts on customers and business partners. You will also drive the adoption and innovation of new tools and technologies in the observability space, optimizing our tooling landscape while ensuring continuous improvement.

  • This role is the first level of people management. This role works to acquire the knowledge and experience to become increasingly responsible for leading a team within a department and being accountable for that team's performance. This role interfaces with the business on topics related to delivery.

  • Leads a small team and is accountable for decision-making of daily activities, ensuring team execution and removing blockers.

  • Gains experience handling difficult conversations, managing through disagreement, and communicating effectively to the team.

  • Can articulate technical concepts in a clear, concise manner that is easily understandable by technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

  • Up to three years’ experience of progressive responsibility as an engineer on development teams directly responsible for building and delivering software intensive systems.

  • Exposure to technology and management principles involved in planning, organizational change management, resource allocation, human resource modeling, leadership techniques, and coordination of people.

  • BS degree in a computer related field

  • Excellent communications

Technology Required:

Team Leadership:

  • Lead and manage a team of 5 to 10 direct reports, providing mentorship, career development, and training opportunities.

  • Prioritize, organize, and assign work to your team, ensuring they work in a mature, agile environment.

  • Provide regular verbal and written status updates on progress, accomplishments, and roadblocks to leadership.

  • Track performance metrics over time and create visual progress reports for leadership review.

  • Foster a culture of innovation, learning, and recognition, ensuring the team stays motivated and aligned with company goals.

Implement Observability, Monitoring & Alerting:

  • Develop and execute a plan to enhance observability, monitoring, and alerting for existing applications and services in collaboration with cross-functional teams.

  • Identify gaps in current monitoring instrumentation, define improvement plans, and implement new solutions.

  • Partner with application and infrastructure teams to define monitoring, logging, and alerting requirements for new features and platforms.

  • Ensure that every transaction step has proper logging and observability to facilitate effective monitoring and alerting.

  • Work with technology teams to determine and document appropriate alert thresholds for accurate, qualitative alerting.

  • Collaborate with the business to standardize and improve the alerting process.

  • Maintain and review procedures and documentation periodically with Level 2 and Level 3 support teams to ensure critical processes are up-to-date.

  • Create and maintain monitoring dashboards and panels for the Monitoring Team and other operational teams.

  • Leverage BigPanda and/or OpsRamp as central alert hubs, continuously enhancing their capabilities and integrations.

Tooling Management:

  • Stay up-to-date on the latest trends, tools, and advancements in observability, monitoring, and alerting technologies.

  • Develop and maintain a roadmap for monitoring and tooling at OneMain, ensuring we implement and support tools that maximize monitoring and alerting capabilities.

  • Optimize tool usage while balancing cost-efficiency and effectiveness in meeting business needs.

  • Manage vendor relationships, negotiate contracts, and ensure we maintain effective, cost-effective toolsets.

Collaboration and Innovation:

  • Work cross-functionally with engineering, infrastructure, and operations teams to understand new technologies and services, ensuring proper instrumentation is in place.

  • Drive the adoption of innovative tooling and practices in observability, monitoring, and alerting.

  • Partner with Level 2 and Level 3 support teams to develop validation scripts to speed up problem identification and resolution.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Proven experience managing the development and implementation of monitoring and alerting instrumentation in a large, complex environment.

  • Experience with at least four of the following tools/technologies: OpenTelemetry, Elastic, Grafana, OpsRamp, BigPanda, AppDynamics.

  • Strong understanding of building end-to-end observability, monitoring, and alerting infrastructure, as well as dashboard analysis and information gathering for escalation.

  • A strong aptitude for creative problem-solving, with the ability to troubleshoot complex systems effectively.

  • Strong leadership, facilitation, and communication skills, with the ability to guide and motivate a diverse team.

  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities, structure work effectively, and report progress with clear visual updates.

  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally with various technology teams.

  • Proven ability to foster positive relationships with internal teams, customers, and business stakeholders.

  • Proven ability to lead and influence change in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Qualifications (A Plus):

  • Certifications such as Elastic, AWS, Azure, or similar certifications in cloud and observability technologies.

  • Experience with cloud platforms and services, particularly AWS and Azure.

  • Familiarity with Elastic Stack or related observability tools.

  • Knowledge of DevOps tools and practices.

Target base salary range is $80K-$120K which is based on various factors including skills and work experience. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for a competitive compensation program that is based on individual and company performance.
